POSITION: A part-time (90%), professional academic staff position is available in Department of Biology beginning January 1, 2025. The working title and official title for this position is Laboratory Manager. This is a renewable position and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ahigh school diploma or relevant work experience. Also required are excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure; ability to create and maintain a program budget.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in the natural sciences, experience working in laboratory settings, demonstrated commitment to support and enhance the diversity and cultural and global awareness of students, faculty, and staff.
DUTIES: The laboratory manager will implement the goals of the department by preparing, and implementing support needed for multiple laboratory courses taught in the Biology Department (e.g., Human Biology, Foundations in Biology I & II, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Systems Neuroscience Laboratory, etc.). “Support” includes, but is not limited to, the preparation of chemical reagents and solutions, organizing and coordinating spaces used for teaching and research, and equipment repair. The lab manager will also assist the department assistant in purchasing chemicals, supplies, and equipment for teaching and research, and soliciting vendors to procure quotes and estimates. The lab manager will develop and facilitate trainings regarding experimentation, technical procedures, quality control programs, and laboratory safety to ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory agency standards. The lab manager will recruit, train, and supervise student apprentices to assist in these tasks.
THE UNIT: The Department of Biology currently has 17 faculty, 4 instructors, a lab manager, a greenhouse/animal care manager, and approximately 700 Biology majors including 100 Biochemistry/Molecular Biology majors. Department members are dedicated to teaching and are actively involved in research with undergraduates as demonstrated by co-authored presentations and publications. Departmental facilities include a variety of teaching and research laboratories, field equipment, cell and molecular biology instrumentation, equipment and facilities, a bird museum and a multi-room greenhouse complex on the roof of the current science building. The campus contains an on-campus arboretum and both native and ornamental landscapes. It is adjacent to Putnam Park State Natural Area.
